Workshop Description:
This workshop will address the core elements underpinning my autobiographical work, from conception to final draft. In other words, it will focus on the creative process that leads to the script, not on the performance of the script. Although the aim of the work will not be to create story, material for story may result from the work. You will walk away with:
- Memoir writing notions that creators of stories based on personal experience MUST consider
- Fundamental strengths of fairytales that creators of oral literature CAN develop
- Steps to mine for personal stories + tools to shape them + means to sculpt them
- An organic approach to building metaphors
- Hands-on tasks for building character
- Hand-held methods to look for nasty things in the dark
Pre-Workshop Assignments:
- Think of a person you have not seen for a while. It must be someone who has been meaningful in a small or large way. It must be someone of whom you cannot say only good things: conjuring this person should bring good and not so good to mind. It must be someone with whom, all considered, you would gladly spend another hour of your life. Remember them as vividly and fully as po Keep that memory alive and bring it to the workshop. Be aware that when choosing this person, you are choosing a level of risk, so choose a level of risk at which you are comfortable working.
- Bring to the workshop a beloved folktale, fresh in your mind and heart. You will not be required to “perform” it, but you will be invited to draw from it.
What else to bring?
- Water
- Lunch [45 minutes]
- Pen and paper technology
[You WILL NOT BE REQUIRED to read what you write or show what you draw in public]
- Comfortable clothing
