Celebrating thirty years of stories from the Montréal Intercultural Storytelling Festival
Barbara Diabo, Daniel Morden, Jennifer Cayler, Judith Cohen, Robert Cloney, and Judith Poirier
Hosted by Stéphanie Bénéteau
For thirty years, storytellers from around the world have been converging on Montréal in October for one of the biggest storytelling festivals in the world. Thirty is the pearl anniversary; and this year six storytellers will be sharing the pearls of their repertoire: stories of joy, celebration, and wisdom. We begin with the celebratory hoop dance of Kanien’keha:ka (Mohawk) dancer Barbara Diabo; we then travel from Wales to Morocco, passing back through Québec and the Maritimes, to celebrate the richness of our diversity and the power of human connection.

Détails de L’événement
Judith Cohen is an ethnomusicologist and musician who has travelled all around the Mediterranean collecting songs and stories from the oral tradition. When the Jews were expulsed from Spain in 1492, they brought their songs with them. Over the centuries, some of these sung tales were integrated into pan-European balladry, some only as Spanish and Portuguese ballads, and still others only in Moroccan or Ottoman Sephardic communities, all with their own tunes and their own story quirks and surprises. Judith will sing some of each, guiding us through the stories of the ballads and the stories of the people who have been singing them –and adapting them– and her own stories of seeking them out from Morocco to Turkey and in between.

The Stars and Their Consolations features Greek myths of some of the most prominent constellations in the northern hemisphere. Hear stories of the hunter Orion, the Seven Sisters, beautiful Pegasus, brave Bellerophon, the healer Asclepius – and the capricious, lustful, all-powerful divinities of Mount Olympus. Visceral, moving and profound, The Stars and Their Consolations is a potent blend of ancient and modern. Trigger warning – contains brief references to sexual violence.

The Odyssey is one of the first and greatest adventure stories. It tells of Odysseus’ long journey home after the Trojan War. Here, Daniel will share many of the island adventures, amongst them: the encounter with the one-eyed Cyclops; the haunting music of the sirens; the temptations of Calypso and the traumatic journey to the Land of the Dead. As well as being a thrilling adventure yarn, this powerful performance is shot through with poignant emotion.
