Archives of Manitoba, Boundary Commission 164, N14100. A group of Metis traders and their families were photographed by the 1872-1874
Métis storyteller and oral historian Ron Evans will be in Montreal for two days only to set the record straight on the so-called “Riel rebellion”. To quote Ron: “There are two problems with the term Riel rebellion: Riel was not the leader, and there was no rebellion.”
There has been much talk about Sir John A. McDonald since his statue was toppled in a Montreal park a few weeks ago. Chippewa Cree Métis Ron Evans has lots to say about Sir John’s involvement with indigenous people. Ron grew up in the traditional ways of his people, travelling between Alberta, Western Saskatchewan and Montana by horse and wagon. In the process he became a repository of the stories of his people: the myths and legends, but also the history. Many of his relatives were part of the Métis uprising of 1885. Ron has spent his entire life telling those stories. What better time to set the record straight on the false history told about the Métis uprising and the devastating consequences on the Métis in the century that followed than right now, as we contemplate the legacy of Sir John?
Ron Evans still lives a nomadic lifestyle and it is a unique opportunity to hear him in Montréal. There are only 30 tickets per show because of sanitary measures; audience members will be seated two meters apart and asked to wear their masks until they sit down. All public health guidelines will be scrupulously respected. This is a unique opportunity to hear a great Métis storyteller, oral historian and elder tell History differently than the history books.
